A Smart Way to ask questions

In software engineering, being able to talk to other developers is just as important as writing code. When you run into a problem you can’t solve alone, you often turn to the online community for help. Eric S. Raymond wrote a famous essay called How To Ask Questions The Smart Way which explains that the way you ask a question determines how good the answer will be. For any developer, asking a vague or most always often the case, a lazy question, is a mistake because it wastes everyone’s time and makes it harder to get the project moving again.


Be Clear and Prepared

A great example of the “smart way” is a pretty well-known Stack Overflow post about why a sorted array processes faster than an unsorted one. In this post, the developer noticed that their code ran much slower when the data was messy compared to when it was organized. Instead of just complaining that their code was slow, they provided a small, simple example that anyone could run to see the problem for themselves. They followed the best rules by narrowing the problem down to one specific loop and using a clear title that explained exactly what was happening.

Because the question was so well-made, experts were able to give a perfect answer about how computers “guess” what the code will do next, which is called branch prediction. The community didn’t have to spend any time asking for more details or more code. They could jump straight to the fix because the person asking the question had already done their homework. This shows that a smart question helps everyone learn something new and valuable.


Quantity > Quality

On the other hand, some questions show the “not smart” way, like when a developer posted a huge Bash script and asked why their calculator wasn’t working. In this case, the developer shared a giant file with many different parts and basically asked the community to find the bugs for them. This is a common mistake because having a lot of text doesn’t always mean you are being precise.

The person asking failed to remove the parts of the code that weren’t related to the bug and didn’t give a specific error message. As you might expect, the question was quickly closed by the moderators because it was too broad. The end result was that nobody got help, and the conversation was mostly about how the question was poorly written rather than how to fix the code. This is a clear example of how a “not smart” question stops progress.


Reflection

Looking these examples, I’ve realized that asking a smart question is actually part of the debugging process. When I take the time to shrink a bug down to one small test case before I ask for help, I often end up finding the answer myself. This careful way of working is what makes someone a professional rather than someone who just copies and pastes code without thinking.

When I apply these principles to a CTF, a “smart” question includes the specific Nmap scan results, the version of the service I am targeting, and exactly what I have already tried to exploit it. By documenting my steps—showing that I’ve checked for common CVEs, tested for basic misconfigurations, and narrowed the problem down to a specific service—I am essentially performing a root cause analysis. This process of asking smart questions often leads to the “Aha” moment before I hit the send button. It turns the act of asking for help into a final sanity check rather than a plea for the answer.
